Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog to have knee surgery Monday

The Colorado Avalanche confirmed Saturday that captain Gabriel Landeskog will undergo knee surgery Monday.

Multiple sources quoted Colorado coach Jared Bednar, who said it was a lingering issue and not related to Landeskog’s ACL. He’s set to miss time but the hope is the Avalanche will have their top-line winger back by the playoffs. More will be known after the surgery.

In addition defenseman Samuel Girard, who left Colorado’s three-game road trip early, is expected to be out four weeks with a lower-body injury.

It was also announced that the team resigned backup goaltender Pavel Francouz, 31, to a two-year contract through the 2023-24 season.

Francouz signed with Colorado as a free agent on May 2, 2018. All 50 of his NHL regular-season games have come with Colorado. He has a 10-3-1 record this season and became the first Avalanche goaltender to record consecutive shutouts since Patrick Roy in 2003.

“Pavel is an important component to our goaltending tandem and someone we have full trust in to be a key piece of our team going forward,” said Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic said in a statement.
