Denver ride-share driver charged with sexual assault, kidnapping

Ride-share driver John Pastor-Mendoza, 41, faces 41 counts of kidnapping and sexual assault, the district attorney’s office said Wednesday.

Between Sept. 16, 2018 and July 9, 2022, Pastor-Mendoza allegedly kidnapped, sexually assaulted or attempted to sexually assault 10 women, according to prosecutors. Based on evidence found in the suspect’s home, there may be more victims.

As a driver for a ride-sharing service, Mendoza responded to women’s ride requests and proceeded to either sexually assault them in his vehicle or take them to his home and assault them there, according to an arrest affidavit.

A disturbing pattern emerged from that court document of a suspect who would prey on women leaving bars, possibly under the influence of alcohol, and needing a ride.

One of the victims was assaulted after drinking in the Lodo area, according to the arrest affidavit. On Sept. 16, 2018, she took a ride-share after being separated from friends, blacked out and woke up in a bed in an unknown apartment with the suspect touching her. She couldn’t find her underwear, ATM card or cell phone. She fled on foot and reported the incident later that day.

A second victim was assaulted on July 27, 2019. She called a ride-share after being separated from friends and the ride was cancelled. She blacked out and woke up in a bed in an unknown house. The suspect told her he found her in an alley and brought her home to keep her safe. Her cell phone and underwear were missing. The suspect gave her a ride home and she later realized she had been sexually assaulted, according to the affidavit.

A third victim was separated from friends after drinking alcohol at Tracks Nightclub. She blacked out and woke up in the back seat of a ride-share vehicle while being sexually assaulted. She blacked out again and woke up as the suspect dropped her off at a friend’s house in Denver. She had injuries suggesting she struggled during her assault, investigators noted.

The Denver Police Department Sex Crimes unit contacted Tracks Nightclub, who identified the suspect as regular patron whom they knew to be a Lyft ride-share driver. The club later provided police with photos of Pastor-Mendoza at the club, his driver’s license and his vehicle and license plate.

A victim confirmed the photo matched that of her attacker.

A police search of Pastor-Mendoza’s apartment turned up a cardboard candy box with 18 cell phones, including those lost by the victims, and a bank card belonging to a victim of attempted sexual assault.

These incidents allegedly occurred on the following dates:

  • Sept. 16, 2018 – The Matchbox, 2625 Larimer St.
  • Dec. 29-30, 2018 – Beta Nightclub, 1909 Blake St.
  • March 9, 2019 – LoDo area
  • March 17, 2019 – LoDo’s Bar and Grille, 1946 Market St.
  • July 27, 2019 – Neon Baby, 1942 Market St.
  • Aug. 15, 2021 – The Irish Rover Pub, 54 South Broadway
  • Sept. 23, 2021 – Speer Blvd. & 13th St.
  • March 4, 2022 – Tracks Denver, 3500 Walnut St.
  • May 13-14, 2022 – Tracks Denver, 3500 Walnut St.
  • July 8-9, 2022 – Tracks Denver, 3500 Walnut St.

Denver Police collected DNA evidence from three victims that linked Mendoza to the alleged sexual assaults. He is charged with:

  • 10 counts of kidnapping his victim to commit a sexual offense (class 2 felony)
  • 8 counts of sexual assault (class 3 felony)
  • 4 counts of sexual assault (class 4 felony)
  • 6 counts of attempted sexual assault (class 4 felony)
  • 12 counts of attempted sexual assault (class 5 felony)
  • 1 count of robbery (class 4 felony)

Denver Police ask other victims or anyone with information to call 720-913-2000.

Mendoza is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 4 at 8:30 a.m.
