Live coverage: Club Q shooting news conference and update

Officials with the Colorado Springs Police Department and the city of Colorado Springs have scheduled a news conference for 3:30 p.m. Monday following the Club Q shooting that left five dead and 18 wounded.

Anderson Lee Aldrich, the man suspected in the fatal shooting at the popular LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs late Saturday night that left five dead and 18 wounded, is facing 10 arrest-only charges relating to the shooting, according to court records.

Court records show that Aldrich, 22, is facing five arrest-only counts of first-degree murder and five arrest-only counts of bias-motivated crimes causing bodily injury, a class-5 felony, for an offense dated Nov. 19, 2022, the same day as the shootings at 3430 N. Academy Blvd.

The charges filed against Aldrich are subject to change, and additional charges may be added, prior to his first appearance in Colorado’s 4th Judicial District Court.

District Attorney Michael Allen said during a joint press conference Monday afternoon the investigation is ongoing and will continue for some time. Records from the court are sealed, but Allen said the seal will be lifted “in the coming days.”

Aldrich is currently hospitalized and thus, no court dates have been set. Allen said Monday he expects Aldrich will be released from the hospital in the coming days. Once he is released and placed in jail, a first court appearance will be scheduled, Allen said.

Aldrich is being held without bond, he said.

Within days of that first appearance, district attorneys will file formal charges against Aldrich, Allen said.

His office “will not try this case in the media” and will only share information it can share in order to “protect the prosecution effort,” Allen said.

All five victims in a Saturday night shooting spree at Club Q, an LBGTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs, were identified by Monday morning by family and friends.

During the press conference Monday afternoon, Colorado Springs police also confirmed the names and preferred pronouns of those who were killed as Kelly Loving (she/her), Daniel Aston (he/him), Derrick Rump (he/him), Ashley Paugh (she/her) and Raymond Green Vance (he/him). Read more here.

“Too often, society loses track of the victims of these sad and tragic events in all the talk about the suspect,” Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez said. “We strive to give the victims the dignity and respect that they deserve, as well as shine the light of public attention on the victims.”

Colorado Springs police will “continue to be diligent and thorough in our work to hold the suspect accountable for these horrendous acts,” he said.

Vasquez held a moment of silence to honor the families who lost loved ones as well as the memory of those who were killed.

The owners of Club Q, Matthew Hayes and Nic Grzecka, were also in attendance at the afternoon press conference, Vasquez said.

Vasquez and Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers both thanked Thomas James and Richard Fierro, “two heroes who intervened inside Club Q” during the shooting.

Police declined to detail James’ and Fierro’s actions Saturday night, saying “their exact actions are part of the investigation” into the events that unfolded.

Suthers said they both “saved a lot of lives.”

After personally speaking to Fierro, Suthers said he “had never encountered a person who had engaged in such heroic actions who was so humble about it.

“He simply said to me, ‘I was trying to protect my family,'” Suthers said.

People who want to help the families of the victims financially can donate securely to the Colorado Healing Fund, Suthers said.

The Colorado Springs Police Department is also hosting a community resource expo to provide residents “mental health resources, spiritual support, emotional support, animal support, childcare, emergency financial resources, LGBTQ+ support, meals and other services,” Suthers said.

The expo will be held at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs’ Kevin O’Neil Cybersecurity Education and Research Center at 3650 N. Nevada Ave. The center is open Monday until 7 p.m. and Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m.-7 p.m.

Colorado Springs police spokeswoman Lt. Pamela Castro asked anyone else who may have been at Club Q when the shooting occurred to come forward.

“We know there were more people at the club and we really want to speak with them,” she said. “Anything at all, no matter how small or insignificant. Please call us.”

Anyone in the community who might have been a victim or has information about a potential victim, or might have seen something or has information about the incident, is asked to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation at (800) 225-5324.

Police will continue investigating and will remain at Club Q for several days, she said.

U.S. Attorney Cole Finegan said he and his office are “committed” to bringing justice to the victims of the shooting.

Colorado Springs detectives will begin calling people whose vehicles are still parked in the lot outside the club, where yellow police tape has blocked off the scene, Castro said.

Colorado Springs detectives and the department’s victim advocacy unit will work to return any vehicles belonging to victims of the shooting to their families, she said.

People whose vehicles are still parked at the nightclub who did not receive a phone call, or who may have loaned their vehicle to someone who attended the club Saturday night, should contact CSPD at 719-444-7000.

Allen said Monday he could not comment on any of Aldrich’s alleged prior criminal history because of Colorado’s “strict” sealing laws.

Aldrich’s “interactions with law enforcement” are part of the broader investigation into Saturday’s shooting.

In 2021, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man with the same name and matching age in June 2021 in connection to a bomb threat that forced residents in a Lorson Ranch neighborhood in southeast Colorado Springs to evacuate from their homes for about three hours. No formal charges were pursued in the case, which has since been sealed.

Allen also said neither his office, nor Colorado Springs police nor the mayor’s office, can speak to Colorado’s red flag law. Through the law, courts can issue “extreme risk protection orders” to seize firearms from people who are considered at risk of harming themselves or others.

Suthers said no one should “make assumptions” about the red flag law and Aldrich’s alleged bomb threat case.

Allen did not clarify whether his office would file a motion to unseal that case.

Colorado Springs police did not comment on what guns were used during the shooting.

Vasquez previously reported on Sunday that the suspect used a long rifle during the shooting. Police said they found two firearms at the scene and are working to identify their owners.

Officials said whether there are additional suspects is part of their investigation, but at this time they’ve only identified one suspect.

Finegan did not comment on whether federal charges would be filed.

Patrick Sharp, CEO of Penrose-St. Francis, said Monday his hospitals were still caring for three patients in stable condition.

In a written statement at 4:45 p.m. Monday, UCHealth said it was still caring for 10 patients who were injured in the shooting at UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central.

No additional information about the patients at either hospital system was available.
