17-year-old cyclist killed in Boulder crash Sunday. “We ride for Magnus”
Colorado cycling community mourns the loss of one of their own
United States National Team cyclist Magnus White, 17, died in a training accident Sunday, USA Cycling announced.
White was struck by a Toyota Matrix driven by a 23-year-old Westminster woman near the intersection of US Highway 119 and North 63rd Street in Boulder, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The Boulder County Coroner’s office confirmed Monday White was the deceased and an examination will be completed with the cause and manner of death pending further investigation.
White was focused on his final preparations before leaving for Glasgow, Scotland to compete in the Junior Men’s Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Championships on Aug. 10.
“White fell in love with cycling at an early age through Boulder Junior Cycling. He was a rising star in the off-road cycling scene and his passion for cycling was evident through his racing and camaraderie with his teammates and local community,” USA Cycling said.
No citations have been issued in the crash, according to the CSP.
The crash went down about 12:33 p.m. Sunday. Both were headed southbound on Highway 119 — White was on the shoulder. The Toyota moved to the shoulder and hit the back tire of White’s Trek Emonda SL 7 bike.
The Toyota went off the road, down a grassy embankment and hit a fence. Investigators don’t suspect excessive speed, nor alcohol or drugs. The driver, who CSP declined to identify, was wearing her seatbelt. White was wearing a helmet.
White’s recent wins include:
- 2021 Junior 17-18 Cyclocross National Championships
- Represented the U.S. at Cyclocross World Championships in January 2023 in Hoogerheide
- In summer 2023, White earned a spot on the Mountain Bike World Championships team
“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the White family, his teammates, friends, and the Boulder community during this incredibly difficult time,” the agency said.
“We ride for Magnus.”
“Our heartfelt condolences are felt for the family of Magnus White,” Madgravel and HEMI gravel bike race co-promoter Kristine Johnson said in an email to the Denver Gazette. “Sadly, we know too well, the bone chilling call that his parents received with the unthinkable and unimaginable news, that they had lost their beloved son.”
Johnson also added, ‘the senselessness of a cyclist, of any age, having their life stolen by a motorized vehicle is inexcusable and negligent. The cyclist doesn’t stand a chance. This young aspiring superstar of our sport is no longer smiling his beautiful smile across finish lines for what should have been years and years to come.”
Friends of the White family have organized a GoFundMe in memory of Magnus White. The goal to raise $75,000 was initially set, however, has already eclipsed $86,000 as of early Monday afternoon.
He is survived by his parents, Michael and Jill, and his brother, Eero.
