Would-be thieves attempted to break into an ATM machine with an explosive device. They were unsuccessful.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an explosion at a Walmart in the area of West Bowles Avenue and West Coal Mine Avenue around 4:30 a.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, responders found that a nearby ATM had been damaged by an explosive device, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The office’s bomb squad responded to the parking lot and searched the ATM for another explosive. They didn’t find one. The area was shut down until 8:30 a.m., when the bomb squad cleared the area of any other devices.
Deputies are now investigating the scene for any leads on suspects.
Security footage showed a red Honda CRV with a covered rear license plate fled the scene heading east on Bowles Avenue, according to the office.
