Denver Nuggets’ Christian Braun excited to showcase growth in facial hair, game in second season

The razor was the only tool Christian Braun let dull over the offseason.

“Well, I grew a beard,” Braun said of his hardly noticeable offseason development during Monday’s media day. “That was mandatory.”

On the court, the second-year wing said he spent his offseason sharpening the skills that allowed him to make in impact on a championship squad as a rookie, while trying to improve other parts of his game that will allow him to have an even bigger impact in his second NBA season.

“It’s more important to be good at what I was already good at, and that’s what got me on the floor. That’s what’s going to keep me on the floor,” Braun said.

“Then, focus on hitting the jump shot and handling the ball.”

The goal is to be a 40% shooter from 3-point range. He shot 35.4% from deep as a bare-faced rookie after shooting 37.8% over his three-year college career at Kansas.

“That makes me harder to guard. That’s what this team needs. That’s something I’ve done my whole life. It wasn’t like I couldn’t shoot before or anything like that,” Braun said.

“Last year, my role was to cut and make layups and shoot wide-open ones. This year, I’m going to have an opportunity to show other things.”

Braun also wants to show his more of a ball-handler. Last season, Bruce Brown served as the bench’s primary ball-handler when Jamal Murray wasn’t staggering with the second unit. This year, Reggie Jackson looks likely to start the season as the second unit’s primary ball-handler, but Braun wants to show he can be a secondary option.

“There’s a lot of opportunity for me to handle the ball more and initiate, obviously. There’s definitely going to be opportunities for a lot of people to do that,” Braun said. “We’re coming off a long season. There’s going to be nights where guys aren’t playing. You get to try those things and expand your role, expand your game a little bit and show people the things that you have. I think it’s important to take those steps.”

Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth said he noticed growth in Braun’s handle. Coach Michael Malone noticed a little more swagger in his step.

“Christian’s walking around like a guy who won a championship,” Malone said. “Christian’s walking around like a guy who won a game for us on the road in the NBA Finals as a rookie.”

Maybe it’s the beard.

A little luck could go a long way for Zeke Nnaji. Through three years of his NBA career, he hasn’t had much.
