Police arrest man in Wheat Ridge following 7-hour tactical operation

The suspect had two felony warrants for his arrest

Wheat Ridge police conducted a seven-hour tactical operation to arrest a man wanted on warrants for two felony charges.

Officers reported to the American Motel near I-70 in Wheat Ridge around 6 p.m. on Tuesday to attempt to arrest Sylvester Williams — a man with two felony warrants for his arrest. Williams had previous charges alleging kidnapping, felony menacing, assault and false imprisonment during a domestic violence incident that happened in June of this year, according to a social media post by the Wheat Ridge Police Department.

Detectives attempted to enter Williams’ room with a search warrant, but no one answered the door, police said. Police then began to plan the operation. An officer fired a a non-lethal baton round through the glass door on the room’s balcony and then deployed a flashbang.

Williams then exited the room and surrendered to police. Officers made the official arrest around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

“We’ve recommended criminal charges to our partners at the 1st Judicial District Attorney’s Office,” according to a department spokesperson.

“This operation was a good example of our officers’ patience, communication and teamwork to take Williams into custody in a way that didn’t result in injury,” the Wheat Ridge Police Department said in a social media post. (Courtesy of the Wheat Ridge Police Department)
