Nuggets vs. Bulls: 3 takeaways from Denver’s first preseason loss
It took double overtime, but the Denver Nuggets dropped their first game of the preseason, 133-124, Tuesday in Chicago.
1. Nikola Jokic hasn’t played a minute in the second half through two games of the preseason, but he’s already surpassed his shot total from last season’s exhibitions. Jokic went 8 for 10 against the Bulls, making him 12 for 21 through the Nuggets’ first two preseason games. Last season, Jokic also played sparingly but attempted just eight shots in three preseason appearances. Jokic also recorded six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block in 18 minutes of playing time Thursday. A more aggressive Jokic is a clear positive, even if it’s just preseason.
2. Julian Strawther’s first bucket was the most promising of his five makes in Chicago. Strawther dished the ball to Jokic and appeared to set an off-ball screen. Right when he approached the defender, he slipped the screen and cut to the basket for an easy layup, showcasing an understanding for how to make the most of his time on the court shared with Jokic. Strawther’s four other makes came from 3-point range, continuing a promising start to the preseason. Through two exhibitions, the rookie from Gonzaga is 8 for 15 from deep, including a few makes from well beyond the 3-point line.
3. The loss against the Bulls highlighted one concern for Denver’s bench. The Bulls finished the game with a 50-30 edge in rebounding. Jokic’s six rebounds in 18 minutes went down as a team-high. Behind him, Zeke Nnaji grabbed two rebounds in 14 minutes, while DeAndre Jordan grabbed a couple more rebounds in nine minutes. Andre Drummond, Chicago’s reserve center grabbed 13 rebounds, including nine on the offensive glass, in 14 minutes of playing time. Chicago finished with a 14-0 advantage in second-chance points.
