Fort Collins officers chase vehicle in possible kidnapping, shoot at suspects

The incident occurred Thursday night in Weld County

Larimer County Sheriff’s deputies fired shots at a vehicle thought to be in connection to a possible kidnapping in Fort Collins on Thursday evening. The incident led to three suspects arrested.

Fort Collins Police Services put out a lookout warning for all officers in the area of a vehicle in possible connection to a kidnapping in the Weld County region around 11 p.m. on Thursday. Around 1 a.m. Friday, Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies noticed a vehicle that matched the description near Shields Street and Elizabeth Street, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

Deputies attempted to make a traffic stop, but the car continued to drive. The deputies gave chase to the vehicle through West Fort Collins for “several miles.”

A deputy deployed spike strips in the area of Horsetooth Road and College Avenue. The suspect vehicle drove at the deputy. The deputy fired his weapon at the vehicle as it drove past, according to the press release. The suspect vehicle continued to drive. Deputies deployed spike strips again. When the vehicle attempted to swerve out of the way of the strips, it crashed, according to police.

The car then stopped at Horsetooth Road and Shields Street.

A man and a woman got out of the vehicle. The woman stayed on the scene. The man attempted to run, but was eventually caught and taken into custody. He was taken to a nearby hospital with “serious injuries,” according to the sheriff’s office. The woman was also taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.

The Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is now investigating the officer-involved shooting, per policy. Fort Collins Police Services will continue to investigate the suspected kidnapping and car chase.
