Freight train derailment in Gilpin County causes significant delays

No one was injured in the incident

A freight train derailed in Gilpin County on Sunday morning — leaving 15 of the 78 train cars grounded.

The Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office alerted commuters to avoid the area of Highway 72 and South Beaver Creek Road around 10 a.m. Sunday because a train had derailed in the area. No injuries or leaking fumes from the crashed cars were reported, according to the office’s social media post.

Amtrak’s California Zephyr train line, which commutes through Colorado from Chicago, is experiencing delays, with trains significantly delayed in Grand Junction and Denver, according to a company alert.

The repair is expected to take nearly 36 hours, according to the alert. Some derailed train cars will remain around the area following the repair, but “they are stable and create no environmental or health threat to the community,” the office said.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation. No roads were closed due to the incident.

15 cars of the 78-car train derailed early Sunday morning, according to the Gilpin County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred nearly a month after another train derailed in Pueblo West and took out a bridge, killing a driver beneath.
