2 arrested in Colorado in connection with Jan. 6. Capitol riot

37-year-old Eric Zeis of Monument and 31-year-old Justin Schulze of Colorado Springs were arrested on Nov. 13

Two men from the Pikes Peak region have been arrested for their alleged part in the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, according to an announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

According to officials, 37-year-old Eric Zeis of Monument and 31-year-old Justin Schulze of Colorado Springs were arrested on Nov. 13 and are facing charges including a felony offense of obstruction of law enforcement during civil order, and multiple misdemeanor offences including disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building and parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building.

Court documents state that Schulze and Zeis traveled from southern Colorado to Washington D.C. with plans to attend former President Donald Trump’s speech and “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6, 2021.

Following the rally, officials said the two men joined a large group of protestors outside the East Rotunda doors of the U.S. Capitol Building that pushed through United States Capitol Police officers in order to gain access to the building.

Amidst mob chants echoing “Stop the Steal,” and “Our house,” USCP officers made numerous commands for the crowd to stop and deployed OC spray “to no avail,” the attorney’s office states.

Traveling through numerous rooms of the Capitol including the Rotunda, Statuary Hall and hallways between the Speaker’s Lobby and House Chamber, the pair then, “immersed themselves in a large group confronting officers guarding the U.S. House of Representatives chambers,” according to court documents.

Retracing their steps back through the Capitol building the two men stopped in the Rotunda before exiting.

“Here, Zeis is seen, in an open-source video, joining a group that collectively pushed officers,” officials said in Tuesday’s announcement.

Both Zeis and Schulze’s case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. Both cases are being investigated by the FBI’s Denver and Washington Field Office, officials said.

Multiple individuals in Colorado have been linked to events leading to the insurrection of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, including one Colorado Springs man who was sentenced to nearly three years in prison in late October.

In the over two-years following the incident, more than 1,200 individuals have been charged in, “nearly all 50 states,” for crimes relating to the breach of the U.S. Capitol Building, according to officials.
