8 family-friendly Colorado attractions that are great to visit during winter
While Colorado tends to get the most attention for its winter sports in the winter, there are plenty of other family-friendly things to do found around the state. Here are eight family-friendly attractions that offer year-round activities.
1. Pikes Peak Cog Railway
The Pikes Peak Cog Railway operates year-round, allowing visitors to the Colorado Springs area to catch a train ride and enjoy the stunning, snowy views of Pikes Peak during the winter. Rides are about three hours long, consisting of a ride up that takes about an hour, 40 minutes at the summit, and a ride that takes one hour and 10 minutes to get back down to the Manitou Springs depot.

2. Glenwood Hot Springs Resort
A little bit of snow and frigid temperatures won’t prevent guests from soaking up the fun at Glenwood Hot Springs – in fact, it might even enhance the experience. It’s worth noting that the resort offers a package that includes lodging, a Sunlight Mountain lift ticket, and hot springs pool access.
3. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
Not only does this zoo stay open throughout the winter, but it hosts special holiday events. The Electric Safari event features over 85 lighted sculptures, a drone light show, larger-than-life illuminated inflatable animals, and hot cocoa. Santa will also visit the Safari Lodge nightly through Dec. 23.

4. Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park’s Luminova Holidays
Elitches opens Nov. 24 for its Luminova Holidays event. The event includes over four million lights, a 65 foot Christmas tree, a 25 foot snowman, a 300 foot long candy cane tunnel, light swings, and more.
5. The North Pole – Santa’s Workshop
This vintage amusement park sits at the bottom of Pikes Peak. The park has two dozen unique rides and, according to Fox31, is home to the highest altitude Ferris Wheel in the world. You can also visit Santa, get food, or browse the village’s shops and watch a glass blower create custom ornaments.

6. Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park
Glenwood Caverns turns the park into a winter wonderland for their Winter on the Mountain celebration. Festivities include live music and entertainment, a half-million lights, ice sculptures, several thrill rides, food, and seasonal drinks.
7. Denver’s Downtown Aquarium
The Denver Aquarium stays open throughout the winter and offers holiday events. The aquarium has a Thanksgiving buffet on November 23 and ‘Breakfast with Santa’ on certain days in December.
8. Denver Botanic Gardens
The Denver Botanic Gardens has hosted Blossoms of Light for three decades. The “twinkling wonderland” consists of a changing display of lights that includes a 360-degree immersive light experience.
