1 killed after shooting involving Fort Collins Police officer

The shooting happened in the 100 block of West Laurel Street near South College Avenue in Fort Collins

One person is dead after a shooting involving a Fort Collins Police officer on Thursday night.

Authorities received a call at 9:34 p.m. about a man in the alleyway in the 100 block of West Laurel Street who was yelling racial slurs and had possibly attacked someone with a weapon, the police said.

When officers responded, they were told the suspect may have attacked another person with a pepper spray, the police said.

When a Fort Collins Police officer arrived on the scene, he noticed that the suspect in the alleyway was holding a pepper spray and an “edged weapon,” the police said.

The officer commanded the suspect to drop his weapons, but the suspect did not comply, the police said, adding the suspect then moved toward the officer. The officer used his Taser, the police said.

When the suspect continued to walk toward the officer, the latter fired several times, hitting the suspect, the police said.

More officers arrived and rendered medical aid to the suspect, the police said. The suspect was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police added.

The 8th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting. The identity of the suspect will be released by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office after next of kin has been notified, the police said.
