Aurora man sentenced to life in prison following 2022 shooting

Henry Griffin III, 28, will serve life in prison without a possibility of parole following a shooting outside of a bar

An Aurora man who shot and killed a man outside of a sports bar will serve life in prison without a possibility of parole.

28-year-old Henry Griffin III was sentenced this week by Arapahoe County Judge Joseph Whitfield following a homicide that occurred outside of the Challengers Sports Bar on Aug. 14, 2022. He was found guilty of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to a press release by the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when Griffin got into an argument with three patrons inside of the bar. As the patrons were leaving the bar in a vehicle, Griffin fired nine shots at them. He hit one of the victims in the neck. The victim was taken to the hospital and was pronounced brain dead and later passed away on Aug. 16, 2022. The other two were unharmed, according to the release.

The incident was caught on security cameras nearby. Investigators identified a white Jeep Grand Cherokee the suspect had left in. The license plat were registered to Griffin III.

“It’s reprehensible that this defendant chose to end a petty verbal dispute with a gun,” Chief Deputy DA Brian Sugioka said. “As a group of patrons were attempting to leave and get away from the defendant, he cowardly started shooting multiple rounds off in a parking lot with other cars and patrons. It’s a miracle he didn’t injure or kill more people with his reckless actions.”
