Brighton teen sentenced for killing other teen in 2022
17-year-old Jonah Graham will serve 30 years in prison
A Brighton teenager will serve 30 years in prison following a shooting that left another teenager dead in the summer of 2022.
17-year-old Jonah Graham was sentenced in an Adams County District Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder stemming from a shooting on July 12, 2022, according to a press release from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. at Ken Mitchell Park. The victim — 17-year-old Josiah Gonzales — was eating pizza with a friend at the park when Graham approached with his own friend. Graham and Gonzales knew each other and the two began a verbal altercation. Graham, who was 16 at the time, eventually pulled out a handgun. He fired three shots at Gonzales, hitting him in his face and neck.
Graham fled the park and was arrested by the Brighton Police Department later that week.
“This was an outrageous, violent crime that took the life of a young, high school-aged victim and it was perpetrated by a fellow teenager — who now must serve a 30-year prison sentence,” District Attorney Brian Mason said. “We should all feel a sense of outrage over a crime like this. Gun violence — particularly among young people — is plaguing our community.”
