CSU Rams men’s basketball receives earliest top 25 ranking in program history
A few days after doing something that hadn’t been done in nearly 40 years, the Colorado State men’s basketball team accomplished something that’s never been done.
After the upset win over then-No. 8 Creighton in the championship game of the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City for the program’s first win over a top 10 team since 1984, Niko Medved’s Rams are ranked in the AP top 25 at the earliest point of the season in program history.
CSU (6-0) came in at No. 20 in the Week 4 poll.
Isaiah Stevens led the way in the wins over Creighton and Boston College at the neutral-site tournament, earning Mountain West player of the week honors after averaging 19 points and 7.5 assists in the two games.
It’s the first time the Rams are ranked since they finished the 2021-22 season at No. 23 following their loss to Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Led by Stevens and first round NBA Draft pick David Roddy, CSU went 25-6 in what was one of the best seasons in program history.
The earliest the Rams were ranked that season was in the Week 6 poll on Dec. 13. The highest ranking they achieved that season was No. 20. The program’s best ever is No. 18 in the 1953-54 season.
The team’s next game is the all-important Rocky Mountain Showdown against Colorado, which fell out of the top 25 after losing to Florida State last week in Daytona Beach, Fla. Tad Boyle’s Buffaloes (5-1) were at No. 18 in the previous rankings.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. CSU has already announced the game is sold out at Moby Arena.
Colorado women drop four spots in latest rankings
Despite a loss in the Virgin Islands, the Colorado Buffaloes women’s team remains the highest-ranked team in the state.
JR Payne’s squad came in at No. 7 in the latest AP poll a week after reaching No. 3, which was the program’s highest ranking in nearly 30 years.
The Buffs had three games in three days at the Paradise Jam Classic, winning the first two against Cincinnati and Kentucky before falling to then-No. 10, now-No.5 North Carolina State.
CU is 6-1 and its next game is on Tuesday against Boston University in Boulder. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
The Buffaloes have four more nonconference games before the highly-anticipated Pac-12 schedule begins on Dec. 30 against Utah. There are currently five Pac-12 teams in the top 12 right now, No. 2 UCLA and local product Lauren Betts, No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 USC, No. 7 Colorado and No. 12 Utah.
