Aurora firefighters have officially put out all fires and hotspots in the under-construction apartment fire that left a plume of black smoke rising over the city on Saturday.
Aurora Fire Rescue announced that the residential fire that began in the apartment building in the area of East Colfax Avenue and Peoria Street on Saturday has been extinguished. Hotspots are no longer burning within the structure, according to a Thursday press release from the department.
The fire began around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and required the assistance of five departments. Aurora firefighters continued to fight the small fires within the building until Thursday, using drones to help reach parts of the building that were considered hazardous, according to a press briefing on Monday.
Fire investigators will begin investigating the fire the first week of January, according to the release. The investigation is expected to take “several weeks.”
The intersection of Colfax and Peoria will remain closed until the investigations are completed.
The apartment fire was the second under-construction apartment building to burn last week. Another fire occurred in the 7300 block of South Addison Court on Dec. 14, destroying five apartment units in a building under construction.
The fire on South Addison Court is being investigated for potential criminal activity, an Aurora Fire Rescue spokesperson said on Monday. It’s unclear if the East Colfax fire will result in a criminal investigation, as well.
