Ja’Quan McMillian took notice when it recently was announced that the official NFL All-Pro team for the first time will include a nickel back.

McMillian might not get a lot of support in the voting this season. But the way the Broncos nickel back has improved in the past year, he might be a candidate for first-team honors one of these years.

“For sure,’’ McMillian said. “I got to keep working on those goals and it’ll happen eventually.”

McMillian was undrafted in 2022 out of East Carolina and spent his rookie year on the practice squad before being elevated to play in the finale against the Los Angeles Chargers. This season, he was inactive for the opener against Las Vegas and played mostly on special teams the next two games.

But in Week 4, he was inserted at Chicago as the primary nickel back and did so well that the former player at the spot, Essang Bassey, was waived. And McMillian hasn’t slowed down heading into Sunday’s finale at Las Vegas.

“I’m not surprised because I’ve done it at every level,’’ McMillian said of how far he’s come. “I knew that I was going to put the time in. I was undrafted so it was going to be a slow process. But I knew once I got the opportunity that I was going to show the world that I can play and that I belong here.”

So, what has McMillian shown the world?

“Just my physicality,’’ said the 5-foot-10, 183-pound McMillian. “With my size, people were wondering if I could play the nickel spot and get in there and play in the box. But I bring that physicality to my game. And people were wondering about my speed also, and I think I showed those guys I can run with anybody.”

The work won’t stop this offseason for the native of Winston-Salem, N.C. He’s planning to head to South Florida shortly after the season to train with some Broncos teammates, including perhaps wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.
