Denver Mayor Mike Johnston on Thursday nominated a new Regional Transportation District board member to represent one of its most populated public transportation service areas.
Following the resignation of former RTD Board of Directors District A representative Kate Williams on Jan. 12, the mayor selected Jaime Lewis to fill the vacancy.
District A covers nearly all of downtown’s business district and a large chunk of southeast Denver County. The area includes Glendale, Capitol Hill, Washington Park, Cherry Creek, Hilltop, Lowry and a small portion of Arapahoe County.
District A features the free 16th Street Mall ride, the RTD train business district loop and dozens of bus routes.
RTD’s board of directors are elected to four-year terms to represent specific districts across several Metro Denver counties. The 15-member board faces an election in November.
The RTD District A seat is up for election in November. Pending Denver City Council approval, Lewis will serve District A until January 2025.
Lewis served as a transit advisor for the Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition and helped enhance the rights for people with disabilities. The new RTD District A representative serves on the boards of the Denver Streets Partnership, the Denver Regional Mobility and Access Council, and the Mayor’s Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
“Jaime is a forward-thinking and respected member of our community who brings a deep understanding of the transportation challenges facing our city,” Johnston said in a news release. “I am confident Jaime will bring a fresh perspective and play a vital role in ensuring that the needs of our residents are met.”
