DIA sees over 80 flights delayed and cancelled Saturday, over 800 Friday night

Ground stop on Friday evening causes over 800 delays. Things lightening up Saturday following winter weather

A string of winter weather weekends has caused havoc for flyers attempting to get away from the frigid temperatures and downpouring snow.

A mix of snow and ice — which moved into the Denver metro Friday morning — caused a ground stoppage at Denver International Airport in the evening, eventually leading to the delay of over 853 flights and the cancellations of 63.

Snow continued throughout the night, leaving over an inch of snow in the Denver area and more than three in some suburbs, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

Things have started to lighten up for flyers on Saturday, though, with only 43 cancellations and 80 delays at DIA as of 8:30 a.m., according to FlightAware.

Temperatures are supposed to stretch above freezing this afternoon, potentially lowering the amount of affected flights.

The significant delays come a week after over 460 flights were delayed on Feb. 10 and over 580 on Feb. 3., all due to snow accumulations.

This has been the third-wettest start to a February since 1934, according to The Denver Gazette’s news partner, 9News meteorologist, Chris Bianchi.
