American ski resort expecting 12 feet of snow over upcoming days
A recent report from California’s Kirkwood Mountain Resort warns of a forecast calling for up to 12 feet of snow at the popular Lake Tahoe-area destination through Sunday, letting would-be guests know that their teams are preparing for the impacts of the incoming blizzard set to start on Thursday.
“We will be working to get as many lifts and as much terrain open possible, however, we do anticipate some operational delays in the coming days – your patience is greatly appreciated as the crew conducts avalanche mitigation, de-ices chairlifts, digs out lifts and boundary line rope closures, and a whole lot more,” reads a statement from the resort that was posted to social media.
The resort also cautions guest about travel in the area, noting that Highway 88, which provides the resort’s access point, will likely be closed for extended periods of time.
Those who are able to make it to the resort for all of that powder should be sure not to duck lines as closed terrain is expected to be extremely dangerous. Skiers and riders are also encouraged to hit the slopes with a friend and keep them in sight. Tree wells can be especially hazardous during periods of heavy snowfall.
It’s worth noting that this entire region is likely to get hit hard with snow, with the nearby Palisades Tahoe resort cautioning guests about up to eight feet of snow during the same storm cycle.
Meanwhile, Colorado has basically no snow in the forecast until Sunday. At that point, OpenSnow.com calls for another storm to move in, stretching through Tuesday. Steamboat Resort and Crested Butte Mountain Resort should reportedly get the most snow over the next five days – 16 inches and 15 inches, respectively.
