Slick roads a factor in truck versus scenic train collision in Colorado high country
A vehicle collided with a cross-country train that’s known for its scenic views in Colorado’s high country on March 3, at about 4:35 p.m.
According to Colorado State Patrol trooper Gabriel Moltrer, the collision took place in the area of Tolland Road and Rollins Pass Road in Gilpin County, which is located about 7.5 miles east of Winter Park. Only minor injuries were reported, with no one transported from the scene.
Sergeant Patrick Rice noted that the teen driver was cited for improper mountain driving and some graduated driver license violations involving having three passengers in the vehicle.
According to the CSP report, the investigation indicated that the train was already traveling across the roadway at an uncontrolled crossing when the truck could not stop due to icy conditions, colliding with the side of the train.
Reporting from Denver 7 notes that the train that was struck was the California Zephyr train on a leg that travels to Denver from Salt Lake City.
California Zephyr is a train that’s said to follow one of the most beautiful and scenic routes in the country, from Chicago to Omaha to Denver to Salt Lake City to Emeryville in the San Francisco area.
