Denver weather: Sunny with strong winds, flight delays and power outages expected

Weather in the Denver area is expected to be sunny with a high near 57 according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

Strong winds will continue in the metro area today. Expect it to be breezy, with a west-northwest wind 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph.

The windstorm caused flight delays and power outages throughout the day Saturday. Those flying in or out of DIA on Saturday and Sunday should check Flydenver.com for specific flight delays and cancellations. To view power outages in your area, please visit Xcel’s power outage map.

An ongoing potent wind event will continue today bringing strong, down sloping winds to areas across the foothills and portions of the plains. Many areas will see gusts of 60-65 mph, with 65-90 mph gusts west of I-25. These winds will slowly begin to decrease this afternoon.

With strong winds and low relative humidity values across parts of the plains today, there will be widespread elevated fire weather conditions in areas that did not benefit from yesterday`s precipitation. Critical fire weather thresholds will be reached in Lincoln and Elbert Counties; therefore, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. this morning through 8 p.m. this evening.

Scattered power outages, property damage to shingles and fences, broken tree limbs, and hazardous travel are all potential impacts. In addition, rapid wildfire spread and areas of blowing dust will be possible in areas that haven`t seen any meaningful precipitation.

There will be a chance of light snow in the mountains Monday and Wednesday but amounts and impacts will be very minimal.
