Colorado resort announces sudden end to season
Breckenridge Ski Resort announced that it will close out the ski season on May 12. The early closure comes after several fresh inches of snow earlier this week.
In a social media post made on May 9, the resort stated that “the recent snow made for some fun conditions this week, but the spring snowpack changes rapidly this time of year and we believe this is the best way to finish the season strong as we look at the long-term forecast and get ready for summer in just one month.”
According to the resort’s website, it currently has a 71-inch base and 340 inches of total snowfall for the season, so some Instagram commenters questioned why the resort is closing early.
Breckenridge responded to one comment, explaining “we’re always sad to see winter go but it’s been a blast! Between the forecast next week, wanting to give our employees some downtime, and getting ready for summer in a month, we felt like this was the best call!”
According to an article from the Summit Daily, Breckenridge stayed open until the third weekend in May last year, hosting its closing day on May 21.
Summer activities will kick off in Breckenridge on June 14.
