Broncos third-round pick Jonah Elliss signs four-year, $5.87 million contract

The Broncos are down to one draftee who has yet to sign a contract.

Outside linebacker Jonah Elliss, a third-round pick last month out of Utah, signed Tuesday a deal that a source said is worth $5.87 million over four years, with a signing bonus of $1.089 million.

That leaves wide receiver Troy Franklin, a fourth-round pick out of Oregon, as the only one of Denver’s seven draftees who has not signed.

Elliss will make a rookie minimum base salary $795,000 and count $1.067 million against the salary cap in 2024.

Elliss competed in last weekend’s three-day rookie minicamp under an injury protection agreement. After Saturday’s second day of the camp, Broncos coach Sean Payton said he liked what he saw from Elliss.

“Good,” Payton said. “Really good. … He has good football makeup. He’s tough. … Fortunately, we were able to draft him.”

Elliss is the son of Luther Elliss, who made two Pro Bowls as a defensive tackle with Detroit from 1995-2003, finished his playing career with the Broncos in 2014, and was their team chaplain from 2015-16. He has three brothers who have played in the NFL in Kaden, a linebacker with Atlanta, Christian, a linebacker with New England, and Noah, a defensive lineman recently cut by Philadelphia.

“It’s been awesome,” Elliss said last Saturday about having joined the Broncos at the minicamp. “The coaches know what they are doing and are treating us well. They’re always trying to put us first, so that’s a huge positive. The culture here already is awesome.”

When Elliss was at Utah, the Utes lost both in 2022 and 2023 to Oregon with Bo Nix at quarterback. Elliss is now glad to be on the same team as Nix, taken No. 12 by Denver in the first round of the draft.

“I’m excited to watch him play because I don’t think he will get sacked many times,” Elliss said. “He gets rid of the ball so stinking fast.”
