Washington man pleads guilty to sextortion, including Colorado victim
Omoruyi Uwadiae, 28, would obtain sexual media and then use it as an extortion tool against young men
A Washington man pleaded guilty to multiple sextortion and cyberstalking charges after using photos and videos to extort “dozens of victims” across the country, including Colorado.
Omoruyi Uwadiae, 28, of Seattle, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Wednesday to 22 overall counts — including eight counts of cyberstalking, seven counts of making interstate communications with the intent to extort and seven counts of unlawfully using a means of identification — following an extortion scheme that began in 2019.
His scheme stretched into Ohio, Washington and Colorado, affecting multiple victims, according to a press release from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ).
The scheme involved targeting young gay men, some underage, on dating applications like Grindr. Uwadiae would communicate with the men and ask them to send explicit videos and photos, according to the release.
Uwadiae would then threaten to distribute the explicit material on the internet and specifically to victims’ friends, family members, employers and others, the DOJ said.
He would then demand that the victims either give him money, commit sexual acts or make damaging admissions like that they were racist.
Uwadiae carried through with his threats on “multiple” occasions, according to the release.
For example, Uwadiae demanded that an Ohio State University victim pay him $200 or have sex with him. When the victim denied him, Uwadiae created false social media accounts using true photos of the victim, stating, “this guy is gay, see pics for evidence.”
The defendant committed the same scheme against a Colorado victim, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation Denver Division.
The crime was brought to the attention of FBI Denver. A special agent in the Fort Collins FBI office worked with police from Columbus, Ohio on the case.
Uwadiae was officially charged by the Southern District of Ohio in April.
