Expect crack down on traffic violations this weekend in Colorado

Troopers will crack down on lane violations, speeding and reckless driving on Colorado’s highways, part of the state’s campaign to combat high traffic fatalities heading into the summer.

Officers will focus on areas that see greater traffic during the summer months, including highways 34, 40, 50, 160, and 287, as well as the I-70 and I-25 corridors, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The Colorado State Patrol is especially worried about the number of traffic deaths during the summer months, with July being the worst month for fatal accidents, the agency said.

Last year, 716 people died from traffic accidents in Colorado — 90 died from traffic accidents in July alone, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Drivers can expect state troopers to be on lookout for seatbelt violations, distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol or impaired substances.

The Colorado State Patrol warned that officers will notably have little tolerance for these violations, as the data show that violating them often mean the difference between life and death.

In 2023, 81% of occupants who survived fatal crashes wore a seat belt, the agency said, adding, “By comparison, only 19% of unbuckled occupants survived.”

The agency asked motorists to be extra vigilant this summer, including eliminating cellphone distractions such as by delegating navigation and other tasks to passengers.

As for seeing aggressive or impaired drivers, the agency said motorists should call the State Patrol and report them.

“DO NOT attempt to follow the vehicle,” the agency said.
