Chemical leak at Aurora swimming pool sends 5 to hospital

The Del Mar Park pool was leaking chemicals into the air, authorities said

Seven people were treated Friday after an Aurora public swimming pool began leaking chemicals into the air. Five were sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a report of leaking gas at the swimming pool at Del Mar Park at 30 W Del Mar Circle around 2 p.m., according to a press release from the fire department. The swimming pool’s maintenance personnel found a pump leaking pool chemicals into the air and shut it down before responders arrived.

Once at the scene, Aurora Fire Rescue’s Hazardous Materials Team began evacuating the pool, checking the surrounding air quality and working on seven people who sustained injuries during the leak. Five of the people were sent to a nearby hospital.

The pool was closed and is now awaiting repairs. Aurora Fire Rescue did not say what chemicals were leaking or how the leak began.
