Tuesday’s primary culled out the crazies on both sides | Jimmy Sengenberger
On both sides of the political aisle, Colorado’s primary election results were a triumph of sanity over craziness, sensibility over extremism and decency over corruption.
Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams has been lambasted for breaching party bylaws to endorse his selected candidates — including his campaign. But neither his crew’s gamesmanship nor Donald Trump’s endorsement could keep him and his guys afloat.
Tuesday was a very bad, no-good day for Williams and his minions at RINO Watch Colorado. For months, these self-proclaimed Grand Arbiters of True Republicans led an inquisition to expose the renegade Republicans in Name Only (RINOs).
Using an email list conveniently snagged from the Colorado GOP, the RINO hunters dispatched campaign emails dressed as newsletters, touting Williams’ GOP-endorsed congressional lineup as “Colorado’s A-Team” and the “America First Candidates.”
But Mr. T voters jumped out, saying, “I pity the fool who votes for these fools.”
Trump — Mr. America First himself — backed Gabe Evans in the 8th district, not the A-Teamer, Janak Joshi. Trump’s pick blew Williams’ choice out with 77.5%.
Lauren Boebert handily won the 4th district in spite of the GOP’s endorsement — seemingly inevitable thanks to five opponents.
Williams got shellacked by Jeff Crank, losing the 5th district by 33 percentage points. He had Trump’s endorsement, which he abused like he abused Colorado Republicans.
After reportedly siphoning $20,000 in COGOP cash for his campaign, Williams milked Trump’s New York “hush money” verdict — raising funds despite explicit warnings from the Trump campaign. Nothing says “MAGA Hero” like taking money from Trump!
Internal opposition to Williams peaked after he sent a bigoted, official party email claiming “God hates flags” and calling for Pride flags to be burned.
On Wednesday, 113 GOP central committee members officially called a meeting to remove him — including many ex-Williams supporters — but Williams refuses, apparently doubting the party’s voter rolls. It’s amazing how fast Williams united Republicans through his excessive, well… pride.
Not even Trump’s name and likeness can save Dave Williams. His campaign — and chairmanship — sunk like a stone tied to an anvil, dropped in the ocean.
In the 3rd district, Jeff Hurd clobbered Ron Hanks by 13 points. Hanks’ penchant for exploding photocopiers labeled “Dominion Voting Machine” didn’t help him this time. Turns out smashing office equipment isn’t a great campaign strategy.
In desperation, COGOP Vice Chair Hope Scheppelman shared an ad smearing Hurd — paid for by Democrat Adam Frisch, but with the legal disclaimer removed. After swift blowback, Scheppelman excused her “mistake.”
Some accident: “I am over the target!” Scheppelman boasted after being caught. “I have posted a video paid for by Adam Frisch.” She linked to it again — because nothing says “Oops!” like doubling down.
Hurd is the Republican nominee. Will the real Republicans like Scheppelman and Williams come out for Frisch? Ultimately, the Colorado GOP endorsed 18 candidates. Only four survived. It seems Williams doesn’t have the Midas touch after all.
Meanwhile, in the Democratic primary, voters took out some of their own trash — tossing antisemitic Marxists Tim Hernández and Elisabeth Epps out of the state House.
Last November, Epps derailed a special session of the Legislature with an unhinged antisemitic tirade, spouting lies about Israeli “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” — a modern twist on the medieval blood libel trope.
Hernández set the stage, refusing to condemn Hamas one day after the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust. He wasn’t even elected, having been appointed by Democratic activists despite calling for a “FORCEFUL CULTURAL REVOLUTION.” Later, Rep. Hernández refused to condemn political violence on 9News.
Their campaign slogans were set. Hernández and Epps for Colorado House: See no evil, hear no evil — and most definitely, condemn no evil.
Alas, Cecelia Espenoza beat Hernández by 6.4 points while Sean Camacho eviscerated Epps by 22.4 points — stopping their racist, Jew-hating bigotry in its tracks.
Then there’s Arapahoe County Commissioner candidate Hashim Coates. Coates got creamed — losing by a whopping 38 points to State Sen. Rhonda Fields. Although he claimed to be “unbought People bossed,” Coates is shadier than a busted streetlamp. He once pleaded guilty to misdemeanor prohibited use of a weapon after firing a 9mm pistol at a car carrying a male prostitute and three others, including two children.
Amid the 2021 Denver Public Schools investigation into misconduct by disgraced former Denver school board member Tay Anderson, Coates threatened legal action against an 18-year-old DPS graduate who’d protested Anderson — comparing her to the Columbine High School mass-murderers.
When now-CU Regent Wanda James’s pot shop failed an underage compliance check, Coates tried leveraging his history on Attorney General Phil Weiser’s campaign to cry racial bias. James got a slap on the wrist from regulators; the marijuana industry pioneer simply pledged to follow the law.
Representing James’s advocacy group, Black Brown & Red Badged, Coates testified for the state’s cannabis loan program, which they’d helped craft with Gov. Polis’s office. James’s company conveniently got a first loan. She later donated $500 to Coates’ failed campaign.
So much for being “unbought.” Coates’s candidacy went up in smoke faster than his ethics.
Let’s be honest: Losing was too good for this motley crew of Republicans and Democrats. But getting crushed? That seems just right. Maybe they’ll start bipartisan group therapy together — treating for their delusions of grandeur.
