Rockies lean back into pitching in 2024 MLB draft’s second day
Colorado’s plan of picking pitchers started Monday, and the Rockies added several college innings to their draft class.
They started with a pair of infield picks before five pitchers in their next six picks and multiple games of relief experience. Their bullpen has been the league’s worst in 2024 and a thin farm system gained plenty of steam on day two of the MLB draft.
Rockies draft breakdown
77. C Cole Messina (South Carolina)
Cole Messina brings a veteran approach behind the plate and handles catching well.
The South Carolina backstop also works counts and carried a .465 on-base percentage with 50 walks in his final year with the Gamecocks. He hit 21 home runs and could bring a dose of power in time.
106. 3B Blake Wright (Clemson)
Blake Wright is seasoned after four years with the Tigers.
He hit 22 home runs and drove in 75 runs in his final year at Clemson. Wright appeared at every infield position besides first during his college years. He spent the most time at third base (117 games).
139. RHP Lebarron Johnson Jr. (Texas)
Texas has placed two members in Colorado’s system after the Rockies picked up Lebarron Johnson Jr. on Monday. They took teammate Jared Thomas on Sunday.
The 6-foot-5 hurler carried 2.91 and 5.60 ERAs in his final two years with the Longhorns. He was the second consecutive pitcher Colorado picked up with iffy command though and walked 44 in his last year at Texas.
168. LHP Konner Eaton (George Mason)
Konnor Eaton can reach mid-90s with his fastball, but like Rockies manager Bud Black often says: there is a walk in there.
He issued 34 free passes in 62 innings with George Mason but struck out 82. Eaton made 28 starts in three years and carried a 5.66 ERA behind a three-pitch mix of fastballs, sliders and changeups. A stint in the Cape Cod League saw him walk 12 in 17⅔ innings (12 appearances).
198. RHP Fidel Ulloa (Louisiana State University)
A reliever with a good mustache. Fidel Ulloa rocks a Rollie Fingers ‘stache and worked out of the LSU bullpen. He appeared in 19 games last season and worked two saves among his 23⅓ innings.
The home run bit him, and he allowed 12 earned runs. The Rockies hope he’s just getting started.
228. RHP Luke Jewett (UCLA)
Luke Jewett brings relief and starting experience to the Rockies’ draft haul. The righty flashed an upper-90s fastball as a reliever but dialed it back to the low-90s as a Bruins starter in his final year.
He had a 4.35 ERA in 14 starts in 2024.
258. 1B Tommy Hopfe (Fresno State)
Tommy Hopfe brought some two-way flare to the Bulldogs.
He was a reliever and infielder for Fresno State and hit .360 last year. His on-base percentage jumped to a career-best .451 too and Hopfe brings 175 games worth of college experience.
288. RHP Fisher Jameson (Florida)
The Rockies’ bullpen has been awful in 2024 and Fisher Jameson brings plenty of collegiate experience to their system.
He appeared in 34 games for the Florida Gators in 2024 and threw 99⅔ innings worth of relief. He had a 5.15 ERA but struck out 79 in 67⅔ innings last season.
