Broncos notebook: With Brandon Jones injured, Broncos to work out free-agent safety Nico Bolden

Brandon Jones

With Brandon Jones out for about two weeks due to a hamstring injury, the Broncos will work out free-agent safety Nico Bolden.

A source said Sunday that Bolden flew to Denver Sunday for the workout Monday at Broncos Park. ML Football had first reported the impending workout.

Bolden played earlier this year in the United Football League with the St. Louis Battlehawks. He went undrafted in 2023 out of Kent State after suffering a torn meniscus at his pro day. He was signed by Carolina as a free agent but did not make the roster.

Jones, a projected starting safety, suffered a hamstring injury in practice Friday at training camp and might not be back until around mid-August.

“He’s probably going to be (one) week or two weeks with a hamstring,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said after Saturday’s practice at Broncos Park. “We’re just going to be smart with his recovery. He’s someone that he’ll attack the rehab really quick, but I think two weeks will be realistic.”

The Broncos also have gotten safety Caden Sterns back at practice after he passed his physical. Sterns, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 last September, started training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

The Broncos took Sunday off and will be back on the field for Monday’s first camp practice with pads.

Throwback jerseys on sale

The Broncos announced Sunday that they will have a Throwback Day on Saturday at training camp, which will include throwback jerseys and merchandise from 1977 going on sale for the first time.

Saturday will feature linebacker Randy Gradishar being the first player from the 1977 “Orange Crush” team inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The Broncos, in their 18th season, made the playoffs for the first time in 1977 before losing 27-10 to Dallas in Super Bowl XII.

The Broncos will debut their throwback jerseys on the field against the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 6. The team that day will honor Gradishar and induct safety Steve Foley and tight Riley Odoms, also stalwarts on the 1977 team, into the Ring of Fame.

Throwback jerseys and merchandise will be available at the team story at Empower Field at Mile High starting at 10 a.m. Saturday as well as at Broncos Park for those with a ticket to training camp.

Payton greets Chesney on stage

Payton said Saturday afternoon he wasn’t sure if he would be attending the Kenny Chesney concert at Empower Field on Saturday night. Not only did he show up, he came out on stage.

Payton has known the country music star for 22 years and the two are good friends. When Payton came out before the crowd, he presented Chesney with an autographed Broncos helmet.
