‘Spectacular’ week at Castle Pines draws rave reviews from PGA Tour | BMW Championship notebook
CASTLE PINES — The BMW Championship at Castle Pines was widely viewed as a smashing success.
“Everyone I’ve spoke with said this is maybe the best one we’ve done,” said Ilka Horstmeier, member of the Board of Management BMW AG.
Roughly 125,000 ticketed fans toured Castle Pines from Tuesday through Sunday. It was “unprecedented” to sell out the Saturday-Sunday rounds in June, the Western Golf Association said.
All proceeds from the tournament reportedly go to the Evans Scholars program. The Western Golf Association said the tournament has raised over $50 million for scholarships for the Evans Scholars Foundation since 2007.
“This club is spectacular,” said Keegan Bradley, who claimed his second BMW Championship in Sunday’s final round. “The way they treat the players and the caddies. They should be really proud of the way they treat the caddies this week. That means a lot to all of us.”
The BMW Championship next is scheduled to go to Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland (2025) and Bellerive Country Club in Missouri (2026).
Burns goes on heater, fires 65
Entering the day 3-under par, Sam Burns posted the day’s best round (65) to finish tied for second at 11-under total.
The 28-year-old from Louisiana notched eight birdies and just one bogey en route to his 7-under day. Burns’ 65 followed rounds of 73, 68 and 71 in the first three rounds, respectively.
“I think overall it was a really, really good round,” Burns said.
Burns started the week No. 18 in the FedEx Cup standings. While his position was fairly safe entering the week, Burns left no doubt at Castle Pines — especially Sunday.
“It’ll definitely be nice to be closer than what I was entering the week,” Burns said.
Rai, Bezuidenhout, Thomas just make Tour Championship field
Every golfer in the field Sunday knew the round’s implications: the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings earned their spots in the Tour Championship, held at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta next week.
Aaron Rai, Christian Bezuidenhout and Justin Thomas are the last three golfers that made the field.
Each of them entered the week ranked in the low 20s in the standings and made just enough good shots to stay ahead of the cutline.
Brian Harman, Si Woo Kim and Jason Day didn’t get as lucky — they were the first three golfers left out. Harman and Day were both in the 20s before the week and fell outside of the cutline. Kim entered No. 44 and still didn’t make the top 30, despite a tied-for-fifth finish at Castle Pines.
Bradley and Adam Scott were easily the biggest risers in the standings.
Bradley, who entered No. 50, won the tournament to move into fourth in the standings. And Scott, tied for runner-up, is now No. 14 after starting the week 41st.
“I really was grateful to be here,” Bradley said.
