Denver prepares for Labor Day with closings, altered schedules, traffic changes

CDOT to suspend all construction during Labor Day weekend

Most government agencies and buildings, including mail services, will be closed on Monday, in observance of Labor Day, as the summer season begins to wrap up.

The national holiday comes with a plethora of closings and events. However, most businesses and restaurants will remain open, though some may operate with altered schedules.

Before taking a trip, companies and government agencies ask people to check company websites for Labor Day hours and closings.

Denver International Airport and emergency services, such as police and fire, will remain open during the holiday, but banks, schools, libraries, post offices, and financial markets will be closed.

County parks, state parks, campgrounds and boat ramps will be open during the holiday.

Parking in the City of Denver will be free on Sunday and Labor Day. Public transit will also operate on a holiday schedule.

CDOT pauses construction

The Colorado Department of Transportation is suspending all construction projects ahead of a busy traffic weekend for the state. The projects will resume on Tuesday morning during their regular schedule, the department said.

CDOT will pause all construction projects — except emergency operations —  starting at noon Friday.

Despite workers not being present, the department urged motorists to drive with caution through construction zones, heed the signs, slow down, and leave plenty of space behind the vehicle ahead.

CDOT Safety Patrol vehicles will also be stationed on major highways in the Denver area, including I-25 north of Denver to Fort Collins and south of Denver to Colorado Springs, throughout the weekend to assist with needs and keep traffic flowing.

Traffic throughout the state during the holiday weekend has been growing over the years.

For example, CDOT saw 186,179 drivers pass through the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels, both westbound and eastbound, between Friday and Monday during Labor Day weekend in 2023.

Drivers can get the latest information on the status of the state’s roadways at cotrip.org.
