Man dies while in Denver Sheriff Department custody

The inmate passed away Tuesday afternoon, the department said

A man in custody of the Denver Sheriff Department died Tuesday afternoon, marking the fourth reported in-custody death to occur this year.

The man died at the Denver Health Correctional Care Medical Facility around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to a press release from the sheriff department. The man died due to “apparent medical complications.”

The Denver Police Department has opened a death investigation, per protocol. The identity of the man will be released later by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner following an autopsy and family notification.

The death is the fourth in-custody death reported by the sheriff department this year, with one occurring in February and two in May.

Deputies found a man under the department’s custody non-responsive in a housing unit about 5 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the Downtown Detention Center located at 490 W. Colfax Ave. He was later pronounced deceased at the detention center after life-saving efforts.

Then, 53-year-old Phillip Martinez was found unconscious in a housing unit on May 16. He later died at a nearby hospital.

Another man died on May 31 after being found unresponsive in a housing unit at the Downtown Detention Center.
