WR Josh Reynolds is early big-play target for struggling Broncos offense

QB Bo Nix seeks first NFL passing touchdown in Week 3 at Buccaneers

The most explosive Broncos downfield threat after two losses is newcomer wide receiver Josh Reynolds.

Is long-ball chemistry with rookie quarterback Bo Nix starting to develop?

“I’m hoping so,” Reynolds told The Denver Gazette after practice on Friday at Broncos Park. “That’s all you can kind of do. Just be where you’re supposed to go and make plays with balls in the air.”

Reynolds, an eighth-year pro, joined the Broncos in free agency after three seasons in Detroit. He leads the Broncos wide receiver corps in receptions (nine), receiving yards (138), yards per catch (15.8) and first downs (six) entering Sunday’s matchup with the Buccaneers.

Reynolds hauled in Denver’s longest reception in each of their first two games; 25 yards against Seattle and 49 yards against Chicago.

Yet Nix has struggled overall to stretch the field vertically with the passing game. He is averaging only 5 yards per attempt entering Week 3. Reynolds is confident the offense will grow behind Nix.

“He’s got great arm talent,” Reynolds said. “He can throw the ball wherever he wants. He’s got that strong arm. I think as we get going more, I think the shots will come.”

Opponent watch: Buccaneers injuries

The Broncos are facing a dinged-up Buccaneers team with several key injuries, notably on the defense.

Tampa Bay right tackle Luke Goedeke, defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, and safety Antoine Winfield are all ruled out against Denver. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Vita Vea is doubtful and defensive tackle William Gholston is questionable.

The Broncos’ anemic running game, averaging 3.7 yards per rush, might benefit from playing against depth players on the Buccaneers defensive front.
