Tyler Badie sparks Broncos running game: ‘That dude’s a tremendous competitor’

Ex-Mizzou RB averaged 7.8 yards per carry in road win at Buccaneers

Tyler Badie gave life to the Broncos rushing attack no matter how you say his last name.

The third-year NFL running back — previously known as BAY-dee — changed the pronunciation to bah-DAY in the team’s Week 2 media notes against the Buccaneers.

Get it right. Because recent performance suggests Badie is on the cusp of becoming a household name in Broncos Country. He averaged a team-high 7.8 yards per carry in a 26-7 road win.

Badie did not talk postgame Sunday with reporters in Tampa Bay. However, on Friday at Broncos Park, he spoke with The Denver Gazette about staying ready on the practice squad.

“I just try to do what’s best for the team,” Badie said. “When my number is called, I’ve got to be ready to go. … It’s more so just showing I can do everything. Regardless of what happens, I need to be able to do what Jaleel (McLaughlin) does and what Javonte (Williams) does. Learning the intricacies of each position is important for me in order to get more opportunities.”

The Broncos twice elevated Badie to the active roster over three games. He went 16 yards on his lone carry against the Steelers. On Sunday, he rushed nine times for 70 yards. Badie’s most impressive run — a fourth-quarter burst of 43 yards, the team’s longest run through three games — iced the game for Denver.

Coach Sean Payton is still committed to a running-back rotation between Badie, McLaughlin and Williams. But it’s clear the new guy with the new name is making his case for a heavier workload.

“It’s Bah-day. But he doesn’t mind,” McLaughlin told The Denver Gazette in the visitors’ locker room at Raymond James Stadium. “That dude’s a great, tremendous competitor. He’s a great brother to me. He works hard and he’s not a hater. He goes out, and when his number is called, that’s what he’s going to do. He’s always on the sideline giving me great pointers.

“So, I’m very happy for him and he’s going to be doing it all year.”

Moss growing at CB2

Cornerback Riley Moss has the extra pressure of playing opposite NFL All-Pro Pat Surtain.

Moss took a step forward Sunday in his third career NFL start. He allowed four catches on five targets for 22 yards and one touchdown, according to Pro Football Focus. Moss forced a Buccaneers fumble in the fourth quarter that was recovered by the Broncos.

“Riley has been doing great,” Surtain told reporters in Tampa Bay. “The touchdown, that’s a great catch by (wide receiver Chris Godwin). It’s the league. Sometimes, stuff like that is going to happen. But what he’s done these past couple of weeks is tremendous. … I’ve got the utmost confidence in him.”

Moss is growing confident at CB2 after a strong defensive performance against the Buccaneers.

“They were driving us a little bit and we didn’t back down,” Moss told reporters in Tampa Bay. “We bend (and) we didn’t break type of mentality. It was fun.”

Country roads, take me home

The Broncos practice this week at The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.V.

It allows Denver to remain out East in preparation for another road game in Week 4 against the New York Jets.

“We’re on (a schedule) exactly like we were back in Denver, relative to our times, we just don’t deal with the time change now,” coach Sean Payton said on a Monday teleconference call with local media.

Payton, while head coach in New Orleans, took the Saints for several practices at The Greenbrier. The Broncos’ 10-day road trip presents a young team the opportunity to bond away from home.

“I’m looking forward to it, just the camaraderie,” Surtain said. “I think we all have a unique opportunity to really get to spend time bonding with each other, also off the football field, and build those relationships that we already have. I think this week is crucial because we have two tough opponents on the road.”
