Broncos excited to wear throwbacks against Raiders, the ‘best jerseys that we have’

Uniforms will be worn to honor 1977 team during Alumni Weekend

ENGLEWOOD –When one walks into the Broncos team store, there are mannequins up front wearing No. 77. And, no, they’re not for guard Quinn Meinerz.

The Broncos (2-2) are wearing throwback uniforms from their first Super Bowl team of 1977 twice this season, including on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders at Empower Field at Mile High. That’s what the number designates, but Meinerz sure is proud to have No. 77.

“I got to represent it well,’’ Meinerz said Wednesday after a practice at Broncos Park. “These are the best jerseys that we have and I’m excited. And 77 is a historic number in this building.”

Notable Denver players to have worn the number include Lyle Alzado, a Pro Bowl defensive end from 1971-78, and Karl Mecklenburg, an All-Pro linebacker from 1983-94.

Meinerz is hardly alone in his excitement about Denver wearing throwback uniforms against the Raiders during Alumni Weekend. The Broncos will be inducting defensive back Steve Foley and tight end Riley Odoms into the Ring of Fame and honoring linebacker Randy Gradishar for having been named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year. All were stalwarts on the 1977 team, with Foley and Gradishar key players on the legendary “Orange Crush” defense and Odoms starring on offense.

The Broncos will have a reunion during the weekend for the entire 1977 team, which made the playoffs for the first time in Denver’s 18-season history before losing 27-10 to Dallas in Super Bowl XII. Prior to that, Denver defeated the Oakland Raiders 20-17 in the AFC Championship Game, making the Raiders an appropriate foe Sunday.

“They’re tight,’’ cornerback Pat Surtain II said of the throwback uniforms. “They’re dope. I ain’t going to lie. They’re my favorite combo for sure. It sucks that we can only wear them twice this year. I wish we could wear them more times, but I got to come out swaggy this week and put something together for sure.”

The Broncos will wear the throwback uniforms again in the Jan. 5 regular-season finale against Kansas City at home.

The throwback jerseys are orange with white numbers and blue and white stripes on the sleeves, the pants are white with orange and blue stripes and the socks have blue, white and orange stripes. The blue helmet has orange and white stripes with the iconic red D logo with a steam-breathing white Bronco horse inside.

“They’re sweet,’’ wide receiver Courtland Sutton said of the throwbacks. “I’m looking forward to Sunday, putting the threads on. The helmets are some good eye candy.”

Sutton called the uniforms “bad boys” and said it would make the weekend even sweeter if the Broncos “get a division win at home” over the Raiders.

“I think they’re awesome,’’ said quarterback Bo Nix. “I think any time you can pay a little tribute to former teams that have come before you and have kind of laid the foundation for any opportunity that you have, I think that’s really important, and it’s fun to wear throwbacks.”

It remains to be seen what kind of throwback garb Broncos coach Sean Payton might wear on the sideline. In the meantime, he knows it’s not an ordinary game, one that is helped by Denver having a two-game winning streak.

“I’ve got 42 tickets also this weekend, so it’s driving me crazy,’’ Payton said of all his family members and friends who will attend. “And I don’t know where they’re all coming from. It will be great to have our alumni back. It will be great to have our guys going in the Ring of Fame.”

Foley sure appreciates that the Broncos will wear throwback jerseys on Sunday.

“That is really cool,’’ Foley said. “And they look good in them. Those uniforms are nice looking. They’re different looking than everybody else’s. The helmet looks great. It connotates that era. And when you see that D, it’s old school. It looks nice. It’s nostalgic.”

No. 77 couldn’t agree more with Foley.

“The throwbacks get you thinking about old-school Bronco football,’’ Meinerz said.
