Father of Federales shooting suspect arrested for allegedly driving son to Wyoming
Steven Marquez, 46, was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory to murder.
The father of a 14-year-old murder suspect in the shooting death of a popular bouncer and former University of Denver hockey player was arrested Friday for allegedly helping his son flee the state.
The Denver Police Department arrested 46-year-old Steven Marquez Sr. on suspicion of two counts of accessory to a crime and one count of attempting to influence a public servant following the fatal shooting that occurred outside of the Federales bar and restaurant earlier this summer, according to arrest records.
Steven Joseph Marquez — Marquez Sr.’s 14-year-old son — allegedly shot and killed employee William Todd Kidd, 49, outside of the restaurant — located at 29th Street and Larimer Street in Denver’s River North neighborhood (RiNo) — on July 10.
The suspect was identified through surveillance footage of the shooting, happening after two groups got into an altercation outside of the restaurant. Kidd tried to intervene and Marquez allegedly shot him and fled the scene.
Denver Police Fugitive Unit investigators located Marquez in Wyoming, where Casper police officers apprehended him on July 17, according to the Denver Police Department.
The father was allegedly the one who took him to Casper.
Detectives contacted Marquez Sr. on July 13 in an attempt to find the suspect. Marquez Sr. claimed that he had not seen his son since Thursday, the day of the shooting. After telling the father that the son was wanted for murder, he claimed that he would go pick him up and turn him in to the police department, according to arrest records.
Marquez Sr. then turned off his phone.
Detectives contacted the father again on July 14. The father claimed that he would turn in the son, but only after he was able to tell his story to a news station. The father claimed that there was video of the shooting that the “world needs to see,” according to records.
The department then began tracking the phone, noting that it was heading north on Interstate 25 toward Wyoming. The phone then stopped in Casper for around an hour before heading back to Denver.
Further investigations found that Marquez Sr. was driving a vehicle with a license plate registered to another car. He also had a relative in Casper that he had communicated with multiple times over the days before.
The suspect was arrested in Casper with a shaved head, potentially detailing his efforts to evade police, according to the arrest affidavit.
In August, the Denver District Attorney’s Office filed a motion to transfer Marquez’s case to Denver District Court to be tried as an adult, according to a spokesperson from the office.
Whether or not the case has been approved and moved to district court has not been decided, with Marquez set to appear in juvenile court on Oct. 15.
