Broncos QB Zach Wilson has been willing to offer advice to embattled Panthers QB Bryce Young

Zach Wilson has a good idea what Bryce Young is going through.

Wilson, a quarterback from BYU, was the No. 2 selection in the 2021 draft by the New York Jets and struggled in three seasons before being traded last April to the Broncos. Young, a quarterback from Alabama, was the top pick in the 2023 draft by Carolina and has struggled.

Against the Panthers on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High, Wilson is expected to be inactive and be Denver’s emergency third quarterback behind starter Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham. Young will start for 1-6 Carolina after he had been benched entering Week 3 and replaced by Andy Dalton. But Dalton suffered a thumb injury in a car accident last Tuesday and is listed as doubtful for the game.

“I want to reach out and I’m sure I’m going to see him pregame and talk to him about how he’s doing,’’ Wilson told The Denver Gazette about his willingness to offer Young any additional advice.

Wilson said he knows Young well since he works out with him during the offseason at 3DQB, a training center in Huntington, Calif., where many NFL quarterbacks go. He talked to Young after he struggled as a rookie in 2023.

“I saw him last offseason, and it was just like, ‘Hey, bro, keep going,’’’ Wilson said. “He’s growing up, going through just like I did, and it’s all kind of part of the plan.”

While Wilson obviously doesn’t want Young to have a big game Sunday, he hopes he will have success in the NFL.

“I hope things turn around for him,’’ Wilson said.

In his three seasons with the Jets, Wilson went 12-21 as a starter and threw 23 touchdown passes with 25 interceptions while having a passer rating of 73.2. In his two-plus seasons with the Panthers, Young is 2-16 as a starter and has thrown 11 touchdown passes with 13 interceptions while having a passer rating of 71.0. Young was benched after he threw three interceptions without a touchdown in Carolina’s 0-2 start.

Alexander, Throckmorton elevated

The Broncos on Saturday elevated linebacker Kwon Alexander and offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton off the practice squad to face the Panthers.

Alexander could make his second straight start in his second elevation of the season. Throckmorton will serve as the backup center behind Alex Forsyth for his third and final elevation of the season.

With Throckmorton out of elevations, it remains to be seen who Denver’s backup center will be for next Sunday’s game at Baltimore. Luke Wattenberg, who was the starting center until suffering an ankle injury Oct. 6 against Las Vegas and being placed on injured reserve, is not eligible to return until the Nov. 10 game at Kansas City.

If the Broncos want to have Throckmorton available against the Ravens, he would need to be signed to the 53-man roster. Another option could be elevating Nick Gargiulo off the practice squad to be the backup center in that game.

Alexander got the start for the Broncos in their last game, a 33-10 win at New Orleans on Oct. 17. He is a strong candidate to be signed to the 53-man roster in November.

Roach, Wallace fined by NFL

The NFL announced Saturday that two Denver defensive players were fined for their actions in the game against the Sains.

Defensive lineman Malcolm Roach was fined $14,069 for unsportsmanlike conduct for making a violent gesture in the third quarter. Cornerback Levi Wallace was fined $7,181 for unnecessary roughness for a hip-drop tackle in the third quarter.
