Aurora council to discuss snow plans, youth violence prevention

The Aurora City Council will meet virtually on Monday to discuss the city’s snow and ice removal plan, the council calendar for the upcoming year and several resolutions, including two involving youth violence prevention and illegal marijuana operations.

Councilmembers voted at the last meeting to hold Monday’s meetings virtually due to the municipal center’s use as an election polling station.

In Monday night’s study session, councilmembers will hear a presentation about the public works snow and ice control plan, which is revised each year.

According to council documents, the city has more than 90 pieces of snow removal equipment and snow removal teams prioritize arterial roads first, collector roads, school and hospital roads second, neighborhood connector streets and residential streets third and other connectors last.

They will also go over the 2025 city council meeting calendar.

At Monday night’s regular meeting, the council will discuss several resolutions of note, including a grant program that would help police investigate illegal marijuana operations and a resolution about realignment efforts for youth violence programs in the city.

The first of the two resolutions asks councilmembers if Aurora should apply for a grant program through the state that would give the police department money for investigating illegal marijuana operations.

The grant, through the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, is called the Grey and Black Marijuana Grant Program and the granting agency would decide how much Aurora would be awarded based on the application.

The second of the two resolutions seeks to “strategically realign” efforts in addressing youth violence through city and governmental partners’ youth programs, according to council documents

Monday’s study session will be held at 5:15 p.m. and the council’s regular meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.

Both meetings will be live streamed at auroraTV.org and Youtube.com/TheAuroraChannel. They will also stream live on cable channels 8 and 880 in Aurora.

The council recently changed its rules to get rid of the public call-in line, requiring any public speakers to appear in-person at meetings. For Monday’s virtual meeting, the council voted to suspend this rule, allowing for public call-in for public invited to be heard and comment on agenda items.
