Denver area severe weather shelters open during snowstorm

Pedestrians carefully make their way through ice and slush

With the ongoing snowstorm pelting the Denver metro until Saturday morning, various counties and cities have opened severe weather shelters throughout the rest of the week.

The Denver area has piled up over six inches of snow going into Thursday afternoon — with some areas, like Golden and Aurora, already over 10 inches.

While snow is expected to stop Thursday afternoon, it is set to resume again Friday into Saturday morning, potentially dropping another four-to-eight inches on the metro area.

In response, the city of Denver has opened its severe weather shelters and will keep them open until 11 a.m. Friday. It has not been announced whether the shelters will reopen or remain open through Saturday’s storm, as well.

Shelter will be available through the Department of Housing Stability at the Stone Creek shelter at 4595 Quebec St., as well as 2601 W. 7th Ave. and 375 S. Zuni St.

There are also “front door” facilities, which offer walk-up support and also referrals to more formal shelters, at various locations throughout the city.

These facilities include:

  • For individual men: Lawrence Street Community Center at 2222 Lawrence St.
  • For individual women: Samaritan House at 301 Lawrence St.
  • For your ages 15-20: Urban Peak at 1630 S. Acoma St.
