Marvin Mims Jr. flexes versatility in Broncos victory over Falcons

OU product embraces wide receiver, running back and punt return snaps in NFL

Marvin Mims Jr. is becoming a do-it-all playmaker for the Denver Broncos.

The wide receiver/running back/punt return specialist entered the spotlight Sunday in a home victory, 38-6, over the Atlanta Falcons. It seems he earned a nickname with coach Sean Payton, too.

“We’re finding new ways to get ‘Mimsy’ involved,” Payton said. “And he’s making some big plays.”

Mims caught two passes with big results.

In the second quarter, facing third-and-10, Mims ran a wheel route out of the backfield and rookie quarterback Bo Nix found him for a 37-yard completion. The drive concluded with a Javonte Williams rushing touchdown.

Later in the same quarter, Nix operated in the red zone facing another third-and-long. Coach Sean Payton drew up a wide receiver screen to Mims that went 12 yards for a score; his first touchdown reception of the season. The Broncos hit another wide receiver TD screen in the third quarter to rookie Troy Franklin.

“Screens are a huge part of our offense. Some days it works. Some days it doesn’t,” Mims said. “With me and Troy today, it was clean as can be. Probably the cleanest screen game we’ve had in a while here. … Kudos to the point guys and then the offensive line getting on their blocks.”

Mims flexed his versatility against the Falcons with a 37-yard punt return. On the ground, over the past two weeks, he’s logged six carries for 21 rushing yards. Mims also runs WR routes out of the backfield to keep opposing defenses honest.

“It’s a lot of fun. I always joke every week with the running backs: ‘I need to gain some weight.’ We’ll see how that happens,” Mims said. “But it’s a lot of fun just giving the defense different looks. You can tell sometimes they don’t know what to do when I’m back there in the running back position. Also, the punt returning, that’s a huge plus for our offense and special teams. … “In college, it was mostly pass plays. So, going in the backfield and getting the chance to actually get the ball on a handoff is cool. It’s a little different. I kind of know my size (5-11, 182) and how small I am.

“So, I’ve got to be careful about being with those big guys.”

The Broncos (6-5) move ahead to Week 12 against the Raiders with growing confidence in Mims to impact the game in a variety of ways.

“There’s always a lot of respect,” wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey said. “Taking handoffs, there’s a lot to know mentally. (Mims) has handled himself well. I’m happy for him. … As long as you can the ball in his hands, I know he’s going to make a positive play for us.”
