Adams County deputies shoot armed man during welfare check, suspect dies in hospital

Adams County OIS

A welfare check turned into an officer-involved shooting after Adams County deputies shot an armed man at a home Saturday.

The man later died in the hospital from his injuries, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday morning.

The officer-involved shooting occurred in the 7600 block of Heather Place, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said deputies were called to a nearby residence at 4:42 p.m. for a “check well-being” call, where they interacted with a man for several minutes. When officers made contact, the man was armed with what appeared to be an axe, sheriff’s officials said.

The man approached deputies before receiving several commands to “drop the axe” before shots were fired around 5:20 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

The armed suspect was wounded in the shooting and was transported to the hospital with “unknown injuries”, according to sheriff’s officials.

According to authorities, no officers were injured during the incident.

Four Adams County deputies on Sunday were placed on administrative leave, according to a sheriff’s office spokesperson.

The sheriff’s office is unaware how many deputies opened fire during the incident. Investigators on Sunday are “accounting for all the rounds fired,” the spokesperson said.

The officer-involved shooting in unincorporated Adams County remains under 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Team investigation.

Authorities continue to interview deputies, witnesses and those involved in the shooting on Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office.
