Mountain town murder of 17-year-old still under investigation with $75,000 reward tied to case
On December 1, 2017, a 17-year-old named Maggie Long was found to have been murdered in her scorched home near Bailey, Colorado – located in Park County and about 35 miles southwest of Denver. Seven years later, the case remains unsolved and authorities are still offering a big reward to anyone who comes forward with information in the case that leads to a murder arrest.
On that tragic day in 2017, Long’s home was found to have been burglarized and set on fire, with several items determined to have been stolen, including guns, ammunition, jade figurines, and a safe. Authorities have maintained their belief that more than one person was likely involved in the night of crime, which included the killing of Long.
Reporting from the Colorado Springs Gazette that was published in 2023 indicates that Long is believed to have walked in on at least three people who were robbing her home and was subsequently killed. The Gazette also reports that the murder was reclassified from a crime of opportunity to a hate crime in 2021. Long was a high school senior at the time of her death.
“We believe someone knows something that could help solve this case and bring a measure of justice to Maggie’s family and the Bailey community,” said Park County Sheriff Tom McGraw. “It could take just one person to help our investigation and we are determined to bring a resolution to one of Colorado’s most high-profile cold cases.”
In hopes of stirring up new evidence, a $75,000 reward continues to be offered to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest in the murder. The reward is being offered on behalf of the Park County Sheriff’s Office, Maggie Long’s family, the ATF, the FBI, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Anyone with information can either call 303-239-4243 or email [email protected]. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
