Nuggets notebook: forward Vlatko Cancar undergoes another surgery; schedule update; NBA stands by no-call

Vlatko Cancar’s inability to catch a break continued this week.

The Nuggets announced that the 27-year-old reserve forward underwent an arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. He will be reevaluated in eight weeks.

Cancar injured the knee in Denver’s loss in Memphis on Nov. 19. The injury was originally listed as a knee sprain. The Nuggets and Cancar spent the last couple of weeks evaluating their options before opting for an operation performed by Dr. Riley J. Williams III at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

The Slovenian tore the anterior cruciate ligament in that same knee last summer and missed all of the Nuggets 2023-24 season. He played a couple of minutes in Denver’s season opener in late October but missed another three weeks with an ankle sprain. Three appearances into his return, Cancar injured the knee after going up for a dunk. He is averaging 2.3 points and two rebounds in his first four appearances of this season.

Schedule update

After the Nuggets were eliminated from NBA Cup contention on Tuesday, the rest of their schedule was filled out.

After Denver’s three-game road trip that starts with Thursday’s game in Cleveland and ends Sunday in Atlanta, the Nuggets return home for a few days off before facing the Clippers on Dec. 13. It will be the third time the teams have met already this season with the Clippers winning each of the first two matchups.

Then, Denver’s off to Sacramento for its first meeting of the season with the Kings. The rest of the previously scheduled portion of the Nuggets’ schedule continues with the Dec. 19 game at Portland.

NBA stands by late no-call

Steve Kerr wasn’t very happy with the final seconds of Tuesday’s game, and he didn’t get any validation Wednesday.

In the final seconds, Christian Braun dove to secure a loose ball and slid on the court. During the scramble, Golden State’s coach believes Braun signaled for a timeout that the Nuggets didn’t have. In a postgame pool report, crew chief Tyler Ford stood by the officials’ decision.

“Christian Braun never fully or clearly signaled for a timeout,” Ford said. “Therefore a timeout was not recognized.

The NBA stood by the decision Wednesday in the two-minute report that reviews officiating decisions in the final minutes of close games.
