Linebacker Alex Singleton, who has been a longtime advocate of Special Olympics, was announced Thursday as the Broncos’ nominee for the 2024 Walter Payton NFL Man of Year award.
The award recognizes players for their on and off the field accomplishments and is considered the NFL’s most prestigious honor. Singleton, in his third Denver season, led the Broncos in tackles in 2022 with 163, in 2023 with 177 and was the team leader with 31 until being lost for the season due to an ACL suffered in Week 3.
Singleton’s older sister, Ashley, has been a Special Olympics athlete for more than 20 years, which inspired him to become an advocate for the organization. Singleton, who turns 31 on Saturday, has supported Special Olympics since adolescence. That includes volunteering at Special Olympics events, raising money and attending school events.
“Greatest honor of my career!” Singleton, a six-year NFL veteran, wrote on social media. “Thank you everyone involved.”
Each NFL team nominates a player for the award. The winner will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 6 in New Orleans, three days before Super Bowl LIX is held there.
The award was first given in 1970 and was renamed after Payton, the late Chicago Bears’ Hall of Fame running back, in 1999. The only Broncos nominee to have won was quarterback John Elway in 1992.
