No. 3 Denver Pioneers advance to soccer’s final four with 3-0 win over UMass
The Pios are back in the College Cup.
The objective is to win the whole dang thing.
The No. 3 Denver Pioneers advanced to college soccer’s final four with a 3-0 win over Massachusetts before a record crowd of 2,361 at University of Denver Soccer Stadium Saturday.
Denver (15-3-4) will face Vermont (13-2-5) in a national semifinal in Cary, N.C., on Friday (ESPNU). Vermont stunned No. 2 Pittsburgh 2-0 to advance Saturday.
“We said it before the season: our goal is to win a national championship,” said Denver’s Ian Smith, a junior defender from Littleton.
Oje Ofunrein, Ronan Wynne and Jason Belloli scored for the Pioneers, whose previous trip to the College Cup came in 2016. Goalkeeper Isaac Nehme, a Cheyenne Mountain grad, filed another clean sheet. Nehme has not allowed a goal in three NCAA Tournament matches.
Denver coach Jamie Franks will make his fifth trip to the College Cup — three as a standout player at Wake Forest, two guiding the Pioneers.
Denver is 124-39-32 — the sixth-most wins in the country — since Franks took over in 2015.
“Knockout soccer, it’s different. You have to be prepared for everything. With the schedule we played this year we believe we are prepared for everything. That’s why we did it,” Franks said.
UMass (13-4-5) managed only three shots on goal. Sam Bassett, Ian Welch, Dylan Akau, Keegan Kelly and Smith recorded assists for the Pioneers, who peppered seven shots on goal.
Denver broke the program’s attendance record in consecutive games — in a 1-0 win over Indiana and Saturday against UMass. The Pios have outscored three tournament opponents 7-0.
The kickoff time for Denver’s national semifinal Friday is expected to be announced Sunday.
The objective remains the same.
