Nik Bonitto’s defensive touchdown helps seal Broncos victory over Colts
Bonitto second in NFL with 11.5 sacks; Denver improves to 9-5 on season
Good luck keeping Nik Bonitto out of the end zone.
The Broncos outside linebacker scored yet another defensive touchdown Sunday in a 31-13 victory over the Colts at Empower Field.
Indianapolis faced second-and-seven from near midfield early in the fourth quarter with a slim 17-13 Broncos lead. They ran a trick play. Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson threw a quick pass in the flat to wide receiver Adonai Mitchell; who then tossed it right back to Richardson.
“(No.) 15 kind of sniffed it out,” Colts coach Shane Steichen said.
Bonitto anticipated the second pass, charged into the backfield and intercepted the backward throw (ruled a fumble recovery). He ran 50 yards untouched for a defensive touchdown to create separation in a late blowout.
“It was kind of a slow developing play. So, I knew something was kind of weird,” Bonitto said. “The receiver usually doesn’t go catch screens like that. Once I saw (Richardson) kind of drifting in the back a bit, I was like: ‘Let me go try and break on it.’ And I ended up getting it.”
The Broncos defense registered five turnovers — including Colts running back Jonathan Taylor fumbling before the end zone for a touchback — to overcome a challenging first half.
Indianapolis entered the break with a 13-7 lead behind a dominant ground attack. Richardson opened the scoring with a 23-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. What changed after halftime?
“We knew we had to get rid of the QB-run game. That was basically it,” outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper said. “We knew that was a big emphasis for their offense and a big emphasis for us going into the game. They had a success with it in the first half. … Other than that, we were playing pretty solid football.”
Bonitto defensive touchdowns are becoming a trend.
The University of Oklahoma product had a pick-six Denver’s Week 14 home win over Cleveland. On Sunday, he also posted a half-sack, increasing his total to 11.5 on the season. That ranks second-most in the NFL.
“Everything is pointing in the direction of, hopefully, defensive player of the year for (Bonitto),” defensive end John Franklin-Myers said. “Much deserved.”
Does Bonitto consider himself a candidate for NFL Defensive Player of the Year?
“Not really,” Bonitto said. “Because it still doesn’t seem real to be mentioned in that type of light.”
Humble and hungry. Now, the Broncos are one victory away from clinching a spot in the NFL postseason. Denver (9-5) travels to face the Chargers (8-6) on Thursday.
“We’ve got to win this next one,” Bonitto said.
