174 people rescued after gondola malfunction at Colorado ski resort
174 skiers and snowboarders were evacuated from the Winter Park Resort gondola after it malfunctioned on Saturday.
A blog post from the resort says the gondola had a mechanical issue at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday and immediately shut down as it is designed to do. Patrollers evacuated guests from the gondola. No injuries were reported.
According to an article from CBS News, Winter Park confirmed that the rocker arm connecting two sections of tower one cracked and bent.
The gondola is now closed for repair and inspection. The Colorado Tramway Safety Board, which oversees and licenses all chairlifts and gondolas in the state, and the gondola manufacturer arrived on Saturday afternoon to determine what happened and repair the gondola.
A replacement part and crane have arrived. After the gondola is repaired, the Colorado Tramway Safety Board will conduct an inspection, and Winter Park will reopen it when they have approval.
“We do not currently have a timeframe for when that will be but are working to complete the repair and inspection as soon as possible while prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of our guests,” reads the blog post from Winter Park Resort.
While the gondola is being repaired, the Arrow and Gemini lifts will service the Winter Park base.
