Colorado unveils first 10 members of new men’s basketball wall of honor

BOULDER — The wall in the northwest corner of the CU Events Center is getting a facelift.
The Colorado men’s basketball team announced Thursday that it is adding a new wall of honor to the arena it has called home since 1979.
As Tad Boyle described it, it’s a way to honor players whose biggest impact on the Buffaloes program has come after they left Boulder. The requirements to get on are simple: play at least five years in the NBA or win a gold medal at the Olympics.

Here are the initial 10 players who will have their jerseys displayed:
- Chauncey Billups (1995-97)
- Alec Burks (2009-11)
- Jim Davis (1961-64)
- Spencer Dinwiddie (2011-14)
- Burdette “Burdie” Haldorson (1951-55)
- Jay Humphries (1980-84)
- Cliff Meely (1968-71)
- Andre Roberson (2010-13)
- Scott Wedman (1971-74)
- Derrick White (2016-17)
Each player will be honored in person at upcoming games either this season or next season.
“I just feel like when you walk in this building, there’s no honor to the past players,” Boyle said. “We have the (CU) Hall of Fame and (that) is something that is based on your time at Colorado. The wall of honor is more about, what did you do after you left Colorado?”
“We’ll get ‘em back here and do it right and honor them and it’ll be a great thing.”
Four of Boyle’s former players will be a part of the first 10 to be honored, but White may have been the person who inspired the idea. He only spent two years at CU and had to sit out the first season after transferring from the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
So, he only played one season for the Buffs and didn’t reach the NCAA Tournament, meaning he likely won’t get his name in the CU Hall of Fame, whereas recent program legends like McKinley Wright IV, Richard Roby and Cory Higgins didn’t spend much time in the NBA, but probably will be Buffs Hall of Famers.
“McKinley Wright will be a Hall of Famer because of what he did here and he should be,” Boyle said. “Time will treat him well based on his career. Richard Roby and Cory Higgins, our two all-time leading scorers, they’re gonna be in the Hall of Fame at some point — and they deserve to be.”
“You want to honor both. (White’s) impact on our program has been pretty darn big, given his NBA career and his gold medal this (past) summer. Derrick White deserves to be honored.”

This Tuesday against Arizona State, CU will recognize the three oldest members of that group: Davis, Haldorson and Meely — all of whom have passed away. Humphries will be honored at the Feb. 8 game against Houston, but the others — especially the active NBA players — might not be recognized at a game until next season.
The wall of honor might not be at just 10 members for long, either. Jabari Walker is already in his third NBA season, while the trio of Tristan da Silva, KJ Simpson and Cody Williams are in their first NBA seasons after being drafted last summer.

“Getting to the NBA is hard. Staying in the NBA is harder,” Boyle said. “That’s why the five years (is the mark).”
